Four Sand Sharks Garner Weekly Conference Honors

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Four University of South Carolina Beaufort student-athletes earned weekly honors from the Sun Conference on Monday in voting by the league's sports information directors.

USCB's Ryan Walker was named the baseball player of the week, Kristy Cook the softball pitcher of the week, Alan Cooke the men's golfer of the week and Shakil Gause the men's field athlete of the week.

Walker, a senior third baseman from Charleston, earned player of the week honors for the first time in his two-year career at USCB after leading the Sand Sharks to a 4-1 record last week. He hit safely in all five games and recorded multiple hits in four of the five, finishing the week with eight RBIs.

Cook picked up pitcher of the week honors for the ninth time in her career and the second time this season. The junior from Brooks, Ga., had an outstanding week in the circle, going 3-0 with three complete games and recording her sixth career no-hitter. She allowed two runs and 11 hits in 21 innings.

Cooke won his first golfer of the week award after tying for ninth place at the ERAU Bash at the Beach. The freshman from Vienna, W.Va., fired rounds of 71 and 73 to lead the Sand Sharks to a fourth-place finish.

Gause also is a first-time winner. A freshman from Beaufort, Gause won the shot put at the Savannah State Tiger Twilight meet Wednesday, breaking his own school record with a mark of 13.77 meters to beat two NCAA Division I athletes.
