@USCBSoftball Rallies Twice To Sweep Georgia Gwinnett

HARDEEVILLE — A pair of late rallies lifted the University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Georgia Gwinnett on Tuesday at Richard Gray Sports Complex.

The Sand Sharks scored four runs in the seventh inning to pull off an 8-7 victory in the opener and put up two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to rally for a 6-3 win in the finale.

Marissa Becker knocked in the tying run in the four-run seventh in the first game, and Amanda Brown followed with a game-ending RBI single to cap the uprising.

Sammi Shaffren went 3-for-4, Haley Brown was 2-for-4 with her team-leading 12th home run, Missy Hughes had two hits and an RBI and Sam Boland added a two-run single. Kristy Cook (12-2) went the distance to earn the win.

The Sand Sharks took a 3-0 lead in the first when Haley Brown launched Ashley Beyke's first pitch to center and Boland added a two-run single to right. The Grizzlies got all three runs back in the second and tacked on two in the third, one in the fourth and one in the sixth to build a 7-3 advantage.

Hughes' RBI double in the sixth cut into the lead, and the Sand Sharks' offense hit its stride in the seventh. Mariaha Sanborn doubled in a run and another run came home on an error to set the stage for Becker's tying hit and Amanda Brown's game-winner.

USCB's rally came earlier in the nightcap, as Boland's two-run double in the fifth gave the Sand Sharks their first lead of the game and Triplett added to the margin with a two-run single in the sixth.

Haley Brown went 2-for-4 and Whitley Martin was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Ashlie Layman (4-5) pitched three scoreless innings, allowing three hits, to pick up the win in relief of freshman Allie Rogers, who allowed two earned runs over four innings in her first collegiate start.

The Sand Sharks, who moved up two spots to No. 22 in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll released Tuesday, host No. 8 Thomas in a matchup of the top two teams in the Sun Conference on Friday. The doubleheader begins at noon.
