@USCBSoftball Wins Five Straight To Claim TSC Tourney Title

CLERMONT, Fla. - The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team completed a remarkable run through the loser's bracket of the Sun Conference Softball Tournament, winning five consecutive elimination games to claim the Sand Sharks' second tournament title in three years.

USCB defeated Ave Maria twice Saturday, winning 8-3 and 15-6, to finish its run of five straight victories after losing to the Gyrenes on Thursday night.
The 17th-ranked Sand Sharks (40-12) needed a late rally Friday night to stay alive, scoring four runs in the seventh inning against Embry-Riddle before winning 6-5 in eight innings. They needed no such comeback in three victories Saturday.

USCB jumped on No. 1 seed Southeastern early in an 8-0 victory in six innings to start the day and kept the offensive firepower coming against Ave Maria.
Haley Brown's two-run double sparked a three-run fourth inning that gave USCB a 5-3 lead in the first game against the Gyrenes, and Maddie Byrd added a two-run single in the three-run sixth.

Kristy Cook (24-4) shutout Southeastern to start the day and came back to win the first game against Ave Maria, allowing three runs (two earned) in a complete game. Cook recorded her 500th career strikeout against the Gyrenes.

The Sand Sharks broke it open early in the winner-take-all finale, scoring seven runs in the third inning and seven more in the seventh. Triplett led the hit parade, going 2-for-5 with a grand slam and six RBIs. The senior finished the tournament with three homers and 15 RBIs. Missy Hughes went 4-for-4 and scored three runs in the finale for USCB.

Kingsley Avery and Alyssa Colding each had three hits for Ave Maria in the final game, capping All-Tournament Team performances.

Ashlie Layman (12-7) earned the win for USCB, allowing six runs (three earned) and striking out five.

The Sand Sharks earn an automatic bid into the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round, for which they will host one of 10 tournament sites from May 11-13.
