PLANT CITY, Fla. – The USCB softball team went 2-0 on its first day at the Spring Break Softball tournament Saturday, beating Middle Georgia 6-2 and blanking Cumberland (Tenn.) 5-0.
Emily Pauley blasted two home runs and had five RBIs to power the Sand Sharks past Middle Georgia in their first game of the day, and Ashlie Layman tossed a two-hit shutout in USCB's second game.
Pauley gave USCB (6-4) an early lead against the Knights, hitting a three-run shot to center in the first inning. Haley Brown's sacrifice fly made it 4-0 in the second.
Middle Georgia cut the deficit in half on Savannah Thompson's two-run homer in the fifth, but Pauley smacked a two-run shot to center in the seventh.
Abby Pac struck out six and allowed two runs on eight hits in a complete game to pick up her second win.
Layman was dominant in the second game, striking out eight and limiting the Phoenix to two hits and a walk.
Cumberland's Kristen Abell matched zeroes with Layman until the fourth, when Whitley Martin's RBI single opened the scoring. Marissa Becker scored on a passed ball in the fifth, and the Sand Sharks broke it open with three runs in the sixth.
Becker went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run, and Martin was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run to lead the offense.
The Sand Sharks are back in action Sunday, facing Martin Methodist (Tenn.) at 10:30 a.m. and Edward Waters (Fla.) at 12:30 p.m.
