HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The USCB softball team took on two more top-10 opponents Saturday at the William Carey Invitational, falling 5-1 to fourth-ranked LSU Alexandria and 6-0 to No. 7 Mobile (Ala.).
The Sand Sharks grabbed a 1-0 lead over LSU Alexandria on Whitley Martin's RBI single in the fourth inning, and Naomi Catt took a shutout into the sixth inning.
The Generals broke it open with a five-run sixth inning, and the Sand Sharks were unable to answer. Martin, Alexa Moore and Marissa Becker each had two hits for the Sand Sharks.
USCB hurt itself with four errors against Mobile, leading to four unearned runs. Becker and Martin had the only hits for the Sand Sharks.
Ashlie Layman was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) and six hits over six innings.
The Sand Sharks are back in action Friday and Saturday at the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores, Ala. USCB will face Brenau (Ga.) and Spring Hill (Ala.) on Friday and take on Martin Methodist (Tenn.) and Spring Hill on Saturday.
