THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The USCB softball team bounced back from the first hitless game in program history to rally for an extra-innings win and salvage a split of a key Sun Conference doubleheader Sunday at Thomas.
The Sand Sharks were no-hit in a 4-0 defeat in game one but rallied in the seventh inning in game two before winning 5-4 in nine innings.
Thomas' Katie Lopes allowed just one baserunner in the opener, as Missy Hughes drew a one-out walk in the second inning before Lopes retired the final 17 hitters. The Night Hawks scored three runs in the first, including two on Michael Cooper's home run, before freshman Abby Pac settled in and quieted Thomas' bats for the remainder of the game. Pac allowed four runs and seven hits over six innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
Thomas also grabbed an early lead in the nightcap, as Cooper blasted another two-run homer in the first.
This time the Sand Sharks answered, as Taylor Boyett smacked a two-run homer in the second for USCB's first hit of the day and Kayla Boyle added a solo shot in the third for a 3-2 lead.
The Night Hawks pushed across a run in the bottom of the inning to tie it and another in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead, but a pair of Thomas errors set the stage for USCB's comeback in the seventh. After two errors put runners at first and second, Haley Brown singled up the middle to score Boyett with the tying run, and Ashlie Layman stranded the winning run at third by getting Cooper to ground out to end the seventh.
Neither team scored in the eighth, but Boyett's sacrifice fly in the ninth brought home Hughes to break the deadlock, and Layman again stranded the winning run at third in the bottom of the frame to seal it.
Layman allowed four runs and 11 hits over nine innings with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Sand Sharks (21-18, 3-3 TSC) host Coastal Georgia for a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tuesday. It will be Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day with players honoring members of the USCB faculty and staff who have made a positive impact on their collegiate experience.
