CLERMONT, Fla. – The USCB softball team played two more epic games Saturday at the Sun Conference Tournament, knocking off No. 1 seed Southeastern 3-1 before losing 7-6 in 12 innings to Webber International in the championship game at Legends Way Ballfields.
The Sand Sharks began the day facing 10th-ranked Southeastern, but USCB's Naomi Catt and Abby Pac were up to the challenge of outdueling Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year Lindsie Scholwinski. Catt limited the Fire to one run over three innings, and Pac struck out seven and allowed three hits over four scoreless frames.
USCB tied it at 1 in the fifth on Missy Hughes' RBI double – her school record-tying 200th career hit – and took advantage of a pair of Southeastern errors to plate two runs in the seventh and take the lead.
The Sand Sharks fell behind 4-0 after three innings against Webber International, but Kayla Boyle's two-run single capped a five-run fourth inning to give USCB a 5-4 lead. Hughes became the Sand Sharks' all-time hits leader during the big inning with her 201st hit, breaking a tie with Taylor Triplett.
USCB tacked on another run on Brodie McGregor's sacrifice fly in the seventh and were within two outs of closing out the victory when Laura Borders blasted a two-run homer to tie it.
The Sand Sharks nearly regained the lead in the 11th, but Bailey Craven was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on Marissa Becker's two-out single. The Warriors finally broke the deadlock in the 12th, when Kara Seymour singled to score Kayla Montgomery with the winning run. Ashlie Layman took the loss but gave the Sand Sharks a chance with 8 2/3 strong innings of relief, allowing three runs and seven hits while striking out seven.
USCB played 52 innings over six games in the three-day tournament, including a pair of 12-inning contests. Hughes and freshman Alexa Moore were named to the All-Tournament Team.
