HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – It was a bittersweet day at the ballpark for the USCB softball team on Saturday.
The Sand Sharks lost both ends of a doubleheader to No. 24 Warner on Senior Day, but they also clinched a spot in the five-team Sun Conference Tournament and saw senior second baseman Marissa Becker become the program's all-time hits leader.
GAME 1 – WU 5, USCB 1
After putting down a sacrifice bunt her first time up, Becker slapped a single to the left side in the third inning to tie Missy Hughes and Taylor Triplett for the all-time record, and she slapped a single into left field in the fifth for her 201st career hit to stand alone atop the chart while her teammates chanted "2-0-1, 2-0-1" from the dugout.
Unfortunately, that was the extent of the highlights for the Sand Sharks. The Royals scored single runs in the first, second and fifth, and USCB had a tough time solving Warner ace Chelsie Valentine.
USCB scored a run in the sixth to pull within 3-1, but the Sand Sharks left the bases loaded and Warner tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh.
Becker, Taylor Boykin and Natassja Hatcher each had two hits for USCB.
Bojangles' Player of the Game: Marissa Becker (2-for-3, sacrifice bunt)
GAME 2 – WU 9, USCB 1
USCB took an early lead on Hatcher's first home run of the season in the second, but the Royals put together a four-run rally in the third and never looked back.
Warner tacked on two runs in the fifth, a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, while Paige Davis limited the Sand Sharks to one run and three hits while striking out three.
Hatcher, Kaitlyn O'Hearn and Brittany Olean each had one hit for USCB.
Bojangles' Player of the Game: Natassja Hatcher (1-for-3, HR)
