Game Recap: Softball |

Sand Sharks Fall on Final Day of RU Invite

WALESKA, Ga. - To end the three-day, six-game RU Invite, USCB softball fell to No. 13 Campbellsville and Midway, 1-0 and 7-4, on Sunday morning at Ken White Softball Field.

INSIDE GAME ONE BOX SCORE

Amber Locasto, Ashlyn Alte and Kaitlyn O'Hearn - 1-for-2 each

Emily Martin, Mackenzie Freeman and Taylor Boykin - 1-for-3 each

Maria Molloseau - 6 innings, four hits, one run, four strikeouts

HOW GAME ONE HAPPENED

USCB's offense struggled for the first two innings, as it went 1-2-3 during that stretch. Campbellsville threatened to score in both of those innings but combined for four runners left on base in that two-inning stretch.

The Sand Sharks had a chance to plate runs in the top of the third, as O'Hearn and Boykin collected hits in the frame, but they were left on the base paths as well.

Two innings later, USCB totaled a pair of base knocks, including a leadoff single from Locasto. Locasto moved to third via a sacrifice bunt and an Alte single. Locasto tried to swipe home with one out but was caught stealing to end the threat.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers ended the scoreless drought with a full-count, solo home run from Payton Blades.

USCB put a runner on base in the top of the sixth but couldn't put runners on in the seventh to fall, 1-0, to No. 13 Campbellsville.

INSIDE GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Locasto - 3-for-4, one run

Boykin - 2-for-2, double, walk, RBI and run scored

Alte - 2-for-4, two doubles, RBI

Freeman, Haley Hawkins and Rachel Frankhouser - one hit each

HOW GAME TWO HAPPENED

After facing just four Midway batters in the top of the first, USCB's offense exploded for four runs off four hits and an error in the bottom of the first. Locasto started the frame with a single and a stolen base. Boykin plated her teammate on a double down the left field line to take the early lead. Hawkins put runners at the corners via a bunt hit. Martin put the ball in play, and Midway committed an error to score Boykin from third. Alte capitalized on a run-scoring double to give USCB the 3-0 lead. After O'Hearn's walk, Bri Dunn reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Martin.

In the top of the fourth, the Eagles plated their first run, as Baylee Woods collected a RBI single to make it a 4-1 contest.

Two frames later, Midway took its first lead of the afternoon, 5-4, as USCB committed three errors in the sixth.

The Sand Sharks tried to retake the lead in the home half of the sixth, as Frankhouser and Locasto started the inning with back-to-back singles. The two Sand Sharks moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, but the duo was left there.

In the final inning, the Eagles added a pair of insurance runs to take a three-run lead, 7-4.

Alte tried to lead a comeback in the final inning, as she cracked a one-out double, but she was left on base in the three-run loss.
