Furbush’s Three Extra-Base Hit Day Not Enough in Narrow Losses to WIU

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - Senior Kaleigh Furbush collected three extra-base hits in the two Sand Shark losses to Webber International, 1-0 and 3-1, on Saturday at Nancy Nichols Field.

INSIDE THE GAME ONE BOX SCORE

Ally Muraskin - six innings, two hits, no earned runs, six strikeouts

Furbush - 2-for-3, two doubles

Mackenzie Freeman and Rachel Frankhouser - one single each

HOW GAME ONE HAPPENED

Muraskin and WIU's starting pitcher - Kayla Swinson - went toe-to-toe in the circle, and both pitchers were stellar in the conference doubleheader. The first hit that was recorded came in the top of the third when Furbush connected with a double down the left field line. The Sand Shark was left stranded though.

WIU's first hit came in the third inning too, as Kelsea Friend singled to the pitcher. However, she was left stranded at first base.

USCB had runners on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings in hopes to plate runs. The best chance came in the top of the sixth when Furbush connected with another double. Devon Weller drew a two-out walk, but the two Sand Sharks were left on first and second base.

The scoreless contest was broken in the bottom of the sixth when the Warriors scored an unearned run. Mary-Margare Maggard tripled to right center, but she scored on a Sand Shark error.

The one run was enough for WIU, as it won - 1-0.

INSIDE THE GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Maria Molloseau - four innings, five hits, two runs, five strikeouts

Libby Carey - two innings, two hits, one run, no walks

Furbush - 1-for-3, solo home run

Bri Dunn, Zinia Hampleton and Emily Phillips - one single each

HOW GAME TWO HAPPENED

USCB's offense struggled for the first three innings, as it went 1-2-3 in that stretch.

WIU took advantage with a solo run in the bottom of the first, as Maggard touched home on a double-steal attempt.

Up 1-0, the Warriors doubled their lead, as Victoria Atkinson connected with a run-scoring double.

The Sand Sharks had a pair of key chances to plate runs in the fourth and fifth innings, as they combined for three hits and four runners left on base in the two-inning stretch. With one out in the top of the fourth, Dunn and Hampleton posted back-to-back, one-out singles, but they were left stranded. In the fifth, Frankhouser reached on an error, and Phillips tallied an infield single with two outs. However, the Sand Shark duo was left stranded.

USCB eventually scored a run, as Furbush collected another extra-base hit in the top of the sixth. The senior roped a solo homer to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

The Warriors added an insurance run in the home half of the sixth, as Abigail Thompson collected a solo homer to push the lead to two, 3-1.

WIU's starting pitcher - Emma Maitland - stayed strong in the circle, as she posted a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to collect the sweep of USCB.
