HOW THE GAME HAPPENED
After mowing down the Lawrence Tech lineup in the first, USCB's offense exploded for five runs off five hits and two hit by pitches. Smith started in the leadoff spot for USCB, and she beat out an infield single to start the rally. Weller moved her teammate into scoring position via a groundout, and thanks to back-to-back wild pitches, Smith cruised home to take the 1-0 lead. Alte followed with a walk, and Freeman smacked a single up the middle to put two runners on. Off the third wild pitch in the inning, Freeman and Alte moved into scoring position, and Reynolds followed with a RBI single to advance the lead to two, 2-0. Gaskin was hit by a pitch after a pitching change to force the bases loaded, and after a strikeout, Walker placed a two-RBI single to right field, which, again, doubled the lead - 4-0. Miller added in another single for USCB to make the bases loaded again. The lead grew to five when Smith, batting for the second time in the inning, was hit by a pitch, which allowed Gaskin to touch home. The final out was recorded, but not before USCB took the commanding 5-0 lead.
USCB tacked on three more insurance runs in the second with one swing of the bat. Alte led off the inning with a single, and Freeman was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Reynolds reached on a fielder's choice, and Gaskin followed with a three-run blast to right field. The Sand Sharks were able to put two more on base, but they settled for three runs in the second to take the commanding 8-0 lead.
USCB tacked on a run in the third off Reynolds' RBI double and two runs in the fourth with run-scoring hits from Smith and Weller. After holding the double-digit lead, 11-0, Steifle cruised to a 1-2-3 top of the fifth to earn her third win of the year.Â
