HARDEEVILLE -- USCB picked up two hard fought wins Tuesday afternoon against Edward Waters, defeating the Tigers 6-4 and 3-2 at the Richard Gray Sports Complex.
GAME ONE
The Sand Sharks struck early in the opening game, as Makenzie Fore and Cassie Brundage drove in runs to give USCB an early lead in the first inning. However, Edward Waters responded promptly with consecutive sacrifice flies in the second inning, leveling the score.
EWU briefly took the lead in the third inning by drawing a bases-loaded walk, but USCB answered back in the bottom half. Tamiyah Whitlock capitalized on an errant throw following Jaden Goodwin's groundout to second, allowing her to cross home plate and tie the game. Moments later, Taelor Chang delivered a clutch single up the middle to put the Sand Sharks back in front.
Cierra Kinlaw (10-10) took over in the fourth inning and put forth a strong relief performance, surrendering just one run—a solo homer to Laura Scott—over her four innings of work. The Sand Sharks' offense continued to provide support, as Chang doubled in the go-ahead run once more, followed by a sacrifice fly from Chloe Turner to add an insurance run. USCB held on to secure a 6-4 win in the opener.
GAME TWO
The second game of the doubleheader was a tightly contested pitchers' duel. USCB struggled offensively early on, managing just one hit—a single from Mariah Stephen in the third inning—until the late stages of the game. However, Daryn Miller came through with a clutch double to bring in the tying run, and a pinch-hit single up the middle from Goodwin gave USCB a temporary lead.
Edward Waters battled back, taking advantage of a wild pitch to even the score once again. But in the bottom of the sixth inning, Makenzie Fore stepped up and delivered in a big way, launching a towering home run—her team-leading eighth of the season—to give the Sand Sharks a late advantage.
With momentum on their side, USCB's starter Madison Murphy (5-5) delivered a flawless 1-2-3 inning to slam the door on the Tigers and seal the sweep. The junior threw a complete game shutout with a season-best 11 strikeouts.
USCB travels to Columbus State this weekend, resuming PBC play.
