HARDEEVILLE -- Backed by the home run power of Makenzie Fore and Jaden Goodwin, and dominant pitching performances from Cierra Kinlaw and Madison Murphy, USCB softball wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a midweek sweep of Mt. Olive on Wednesday afternoon at the Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville winning 3-1 and 2-1.Â
Murphy (7-5) picked up right where she left off after being named Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week. The junior threw a complete game, allowing just one run on two hits. She allowed four batters to reach via walk but also struck out five. Jaden Goodwin put the Sand Sharks on the board in the first inning, lacing an RBI double into the right-center field gap, scoring Saria Simmons, who reached scoring position courtesy of a Tamiyah Whitlock sacrifice bunt. Murphy didn't allow a base hit until the fourth, when Sam Taylor doubled home Mt. Olive's first run. The Trojans' threat was quickly erased after Britt Stephens lined into a double play and Liz Thome flew out to end the inning.Â
UMO had a chance to take the lead in the following inning, but USCB's starter worked out of a bases-loaded jam, getting Taylor Smothers to fly out to Simmons in right. Beaufort threatened in the bottom half of the fifth, but the Sand Sharks' potential second run was left stranded on second after a flyout. Murphy worked around a one-out single in the sixth, giving the Sand Sharks a chance to recapture the lead. After a strikeout to begin the inning, Goodwin picked up her second double of the game, setting the stage for Fore, who crushed the first pitch she saw over the left-field wall—her team-leading ninth home run of the year—to give USCB a 3–1 lead. That was plenty of insurance for Murphy, who worked a 1-2-3 inning to close out Game 1.
Goodwin's extra-base power continued in the opening inning of Game 2. The senior out of Corner, Alabama, promptly crushed an opposite-field homer to give USCB a 2–0 lead. That was all Kinlaw (11-11) needed, as she dominated the opposition, not allowing a single baserunner until the fourth inning. USCB's infield defense was on display throughout, as Fore and Goodwin made web gem-worthy defensive plays, laying out into foul territory to record outs. Kinlaw worked a 1-2-3 fifth and sixth inning, but the Trojans tagged her for a single run in the seventh after Thome hit a solo homer to left. The senior lefty didn't let the home run rattle her; after allowing a walk, she shut the door on the comeback attempt by striking out the next two batters swinging.
Beaufort hosts rival USC Aiken this weekend for a three-game set beginning Friday, April 18 at 6 p.m. in Hardeeville. A doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m., concludes the series.
