Murphy’s Complete Game, Turner’s Late RBI Lift USCB Past GCSU

MILLEDGEVILLE, GEORGIA – The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team opened a three-game series Friday with a 2–1 victory over the Georgia College & State Bobcats, using a seventh-inning run to take the lead and a complete-game performance by Madison Murphy.

USCB improves to 18–11 on the season with a 2–5 conference record, while GCSU falls to 8–13.

The Sand Sharks were led by Murphy's 10th complete game of the season and her ninth win, as she struck out two over seven innings. USCB's offense was paced by Catharine Conway, who recorded three hits. Chloe Turner added two hits and the game-winning RBI. Katelyn Boyette and Saria Simmons scored the team's two runs.

Conway led off the game with a single, but Georgia College & State worked out of trouble to keep the game scoreless after the top of the inning. The Sand Sharks struck first in the top half of the second inning, as Boyette and Turner opened with singles and a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position. A wild pitch on a strikeout brought home Boyette for a 1–0 lead.

The Bobcats threatened in the next inning with a leadoff double and a walk to put two runners on base, but Murphy escaped the jam with two flyouts to hold the lead.

Chloe Turner and Ashley Grieser recorded singles in the fourth as the Sand Sharks looked to extend their advantage, but a lineout ended the inning with USCB still ahead 1–0.

The game remained 1–0 into the sixth inning, when the Bobcats tied it. A leadoff single followed by a sacrifice advanced a runner into scoring position, and an RBI single to right field evened the score at 1–1.

USCB responded in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Saria Simmons sparked a rally with a single. The Sand Sharks then loaded the bases after a Taelor Chang single and Boyette reaching safely. Turner drew a bases-loaded walk to give USCB a 2–1 lead.

Georgia College & State threatened again in the bottom of the inning with a single and a walk, putting the tying run in scoring position and the winning run on base. Murphy closed the door, inducing a foul out and a lineout to secure the 2–1 victory in the series opener.

USCB will close out the road conference series Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Bobcat Softball Field.
