HARDEEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA — The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team closed out its opening conference series Sunday with Game three against Columbus State. The Cougars used a six-run third inning to take the lead before closing out the 9–4 victory over the Sand Sharks.
USCB is now 15–8 overall with a 1–2 conference record.
The offense was led by Tamiyah Whitlock and Taelor Chang, who each recorded three hits in the game. Saria Simmons finished with a team-high two RBIs, while Whitlock and Katelyn Boyette each added one.
In the opening inning, both teams put a runner on base, but a strikeout by Madison Murphy and Emma Brinkman throwing out a runner attempting to steal ended the frame with the game scoreless.
Columbus State scored first after a leadoff single and an error put the lead runner in scoring position before an RBI single made it 1–0.
The Sand Sharks responded in the bottom of the second with four runs. Chang led off the inning with a double before an RBI single by Boyette tied the game at 1–1. Whitlock followed with an RBI single through the left side to score Ashley Grieser and give USCB a 2–1 lead. Simmons then delivered a two-RBI single up the middle, extending the Sand Sharks' lead to 4–1 through two innings.
Columbus State answered in the third inning to regain the lead. The Cougars scored six runs in the frame, beginning with an RBI single that cut the deficit to 4–2. A three-run home run then gave the visitors a 5–4 advantage. After two walks, Green delivered a two-RBI double to extend the Cougars' lead to 7–4.
Columbus State added two more runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly and a bunt that allowed another run to score, pushing the lead to 9–4.
USCB put runners on base in three consecutive innings, but a double play and a lineout double play helped Columbus State escape two innings with no damage allowed.
The Cougars closed out the 9–4 victory to secure the series win over the Sand Sharks.
USCB returns to action March 13 as the Sand Sharks open a three-game home series against Lander. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
