Sand Sharks Split Doubleheader to Secure Series Victory Over Augusta

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA. – The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team closed its three-game series against Augusta on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader. USCB secured the series victory after splitting the two games. Augusta took an early lead in game one and went on to defeat the Sand Sharks, 5–0. USCB responded in game two, scoring in the opening inning leading to a 5–1 win to claim the series.

Following the split, USCB improves to 27–17 on the season, while Augusta falls to 20–23.

GAME ONE

The Sand Sharks recorded three hits from three different players, as Catharine Conway, Tamiyah Whitlock, and Chloe Turner each collected one.

After a scoreless top of the first inning, Augusta struck first. A single and a stolen base set up an RBI single to give the Jaguars a 1–0 lead.

In the second inning, USCB put a runner in scoring position but was unable to capitalize, recording a groundout and a flyout to end the threat.

Augusta extended its lead in the third inning. A walk and a stolen base led to another RBI single, making it 2–0. The Jaguars added to their advantage with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch, pushing the lead to 4–0.

The score remained 4–0 until the fifth inning, when Augusta added a solo home run to make it 5–0.

USCB threatened in the seventh inning by loading the bases, but Augusta escaped the jam with a strikeout to seal the victory and even the series at 1–1.

GAME TWO

Catharine Conway led the Sand Sharks with three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Alyssa Rose and Tamiyah Whitlock each added two hits, while Saria Simmons, Caleigh Eubanks, and Rose drove in runs.

Madison Murphy tossed a complete game, striking out six and earning her 15th victory of the season.

Conway led off the game with a single and stole two bases to set up an RBI groundout by Simmons, giving USCB a 1–0 lead.

The score remained 1–0 until the third inning. After putting runners on the corners via a single and a stolen base, a walk loaded the bases. A double steal brought Conway home, extending the lead to 2–0.

In the fourth inning, an error and a single put runners in scoring position before an RBI single pushed the lead to 3–0.

USCB added two more runs in the fifth inning. Back-to-back singles set up a sacrifice fly by Eubanks to make it 4–0, and Rose followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 5–0.

Augusta scored its only run of the game in the fifth inning on a solo home run, cutting the deficit to 5–1.

Murphy closed out the game with a perfect seventh inning, finishing with a 1-2-3 frame and her sixth strikeout to secure the series victory.

USCB will close out the home portion of its regular season with a three-game series against Georgia Southwestern State beginning Saturday, April 25 at 4:00 p.m. at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
