LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team ran its program-best winning streak to 12 games by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader at Georgia Gwinnett on Wednesday, as the 11th-ranked Sand Sharks won 10-1 and 5-4 to spoil the opening of the Grizzlies' new softball facility. 

USCB (35-3) jumped out to an early lead in the opener, scoring four runs in the first on Taylor Triplett's RBI single and Maddie Byrd's three-run homer to right-center. Shelby Zipperer added an RBI single in the third and Mariaha Sanborn drove her home with a run-scoring double for a 6-0 margin.

Zipperer and Sanborn both added RBI singles in the four-run seventh, and Caitlin Campbell and Chelsey Blasingame also drove in runs in the inning. C.J. Browder was 3-for-4 and scored three runs in the game.

The offensive support was beyond sufficient for ace Kristy Cook (16-0), who limited the Grizzlies to one run on two hits in a complete game. 

The Sand Sharks again started hot in the second game, scoring two runs in the first and two in the fourth for a 4-0 cushion. Browder and Zipperer hit RBI doubles in the first, and Alexandria Simmons and Taylor Triplett added run-scoring singles in the fourth.

The Grizzlies (16-26) broke through for two in the fourth before Zipperer's solo homer in the fifth made it 5-2 USCB. 

Georgia Gwinnett scored two unearned runs in the fifth to get within one, but freshman Ashlie Layman worked around a two-out single in the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh to record her second save.

Sophomore Caitlin Campbell (9-3) was the winning pitcher, holding the Grizzlies to two runs on four hits over four innings. Layman allowed two unearned runs on two hits over three frames.

The Sand Sharks travel to Jacksonville, Fla., on Monday for a non-conference doubleheader at Edward Waters, then return home to face Warner and Southeastern in Sun Conference doubleheaders next weekend.
