Photo GalleryThe University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team saw another close game slip away in the final minutes Friday, as the Sand Sharks lost 2-1 to visiting Webber International in a Sun Conference contest at Fin Land Field.
Freshman Hayley Pina gave USCB the lead in the 24th minute, but the Warriors answered less than six minutes later and scored the game-winner in the 81st minute to send the Sand Sharks (4-10, 0-6 TSC) to their sixth straight defeat. USCB has lost by a single goal four times this season — including three in conference play.Â
"It's frustrating because we created so many opportunities and peppered the goal throughout the game, but we couldn't find the second goal," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "We couldn't get the ball past their keeper. She had a couple of great saves in the first half to keep us from getting a big lead."Â
The Sand Sharks controlled play for large stretches but were unable to take advantage of numerous scoring chances. They had 21 shots — 11 on goal — and kept the pressure on throughout the second half, nearly scoring the go-ahead goal on several occasions.
Webber International (5-5-1, 3-2-1) scored both of its goals off corner kicks by Gloria Gomez, with Leah Parker scoring the equalizer in the 30th minute and Laura Borders putting in the game-winner with 9:30 left in regulation.
One of USCB's best chances came in the 57th minute, when Pina had a one-on-one with Hanel and rocketed a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar. Just two minutes later, Pina played a ball into the box for senior Steph Moldenhauer, whose shot got past Hanel but skirted just right of the post.Â
Despite another tough loss, Heberling was pleased with his team's intensity in the second half and hopes to see that attitude carry over to Sunday's key Sun Conference match against visiting Warner at 1 p.m.
"I was proud of how we came out in the second half and really attacked their back line, and Hayley Pina played her best game since our scrimmage against Montreat," Heberling said. "We need to maintain that focus and be ready for Sunday."Â
