An injury-riddled University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team put up a strong challenge before falling 2-0 to visiting SCAD Savannah on Saturday at Fin Land Field.
Ryanne Frazier broke a scoreless tie in the 53rd minute and Macy Jarvis added a goal with five seconds remaining to help the Bees spoil USCB's homecoming contest, but USCB coach Ed Heberling saw his team make huge strides from the opening weekend of Sun Conference play.
"Losing is never fun, but our team took a big turn this week," Heberling said. "We bounced back and played at a much higher level and played for a full 90 minutes."
The Sand Sharks (4-7, 0-3 TSC) didn't muster much of a threat in the first half while attacking into a strong breeze, but goalkeeper Chelsie Mummert saved six shots and made aggressive plays coming off her line to thwart several more chances and keep it tied heading to halftime.
SCAD (6-5, 2-1) got on the board early in the second half, taking advantage of a USCB foul in the Bees' attacking end. Gabrielle Garbe played the free kick to Michele Treinen, who sent a ball into the box for Frazier.
The Sand Sharks produced a number of quality chances in search of the equalizer, but they couldn't convert. SCAD goalkeeper Sara Hall registered five saves, and after USCB's final flurry failed to produce a goal, the Bees countered and capped the victory on Jarvis' goal off a cross from Lisa Singleton.
"I am proud of this team," Heberling said. "We still have work to do moving forward, but the change in the team's mentality tells me they are ready."
USCB hits the road next weekend for a pair of Sun Conference games, playing at Thomas at 2 p.m. Friday and at Embry-Riddle at 1 p.m. Sunday.
