HARDEEVILLE — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team manufactured one late rally and held off another to claim a three-game sweep of visiting Truett-McConnell on Saturday at Richard Gray Sports Complex.Â
The Sand Sharks rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win the opener 4-3 in eight innings and shut down a potential comeback in the seventh inning for a 5-3 victory in the finale. USCB is off to a 6-1 start, its best since beginning the 2011 season 11-1.Â
USCB needed some late drama to force extra innings in the opener, scoring twice in the sixth and tying it on Michael Johnson's RBI double in the seventh. The Sand Sharks then won it with a two-out rally in the eighth, as Kyle Thompson walked, stole second and scored on Ashly Morris' RBI single.Â
Jamie Strock (2-0) turned in another strong effort on the mound, going the distance and limiting the Bears to two earned runs on eight hits. He struck out four and did not issue a walk. Morris and Johnson each had two hits and an RBI and Johnny Cole added two hits and scored a run.Â
USCB managed only two hits in the nightcap but was able to take advantage of four Truett-McConnell errors and another strong pitching performance. The Sand Sharks opened the scoring on Zack Holt's RBI double in the first and tacked on two unearned runs in the fourth to make it 3-0.Â
After the Bears scored twice in the fifth, USCB pushed across single runs in the fifth and sixth to reestablish a three-run cushion.Â
That was enough for starter Gage Roth (1-0) and reliever Blake Drew. Roth went six innings, allowing two runs and six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Drew gave up a run on two hits in the seventh before slamming the door for his second save in two days.Â
The Sand Sharks are back in action Tuesday, hosting Middle Georgia for a doubleheader starting at noon.Â
