COCHRAN, Ga. — The 18th-ranked University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team had its eight-game winning streak snapped Tuesday at Middle Georgia State but rebounded to earn a split of the doubleheader and pick up its 20th victory of the season, surpassing last year's total.
The Sand Sharks (20-5) rallied from a four-run deficit in the first game to tie it before the Knights won it 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh on Tyler Epps' game-ending RBI single. USCB again dug out of a 4-0 hole in the second game and broke it open late for a 14-8 victory.
Ashly Morris hit a two-run homer and Zack Holt blasted two home runs to help the Sand Sharks come back in the opener, and USCB tied it at 6 on Alex Bonilla's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh. The Knights strung together a pair of hits and an intentional walk in the bottom of the inning to lead the bases before Epps served a single into right to win it.
Holt went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Morris was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Michael Johnson and John Cloyd each added two hits. Kutler Lane took the loss in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) in 2 1/3 innings.
USCB pounded 18 hits in the nightcap with the bottom of the order leading the way. The Nos. 7-9 hitters combined to go 9-for-12 with nine RBIs and seven runs scored. Cloyd was 4-for-4 with three RBIs, Josh Reinhart was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and scored four runs and Chaztin Venezia was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.
Johnson also had three hits and an RBI, Zack Saldivar was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Morris added two hits.
The Sand Sharks scored three in the third and two in the fourth to erase the early deficit and take a 5-4 lead, but the Knights answered with two in the fourth to regain the lead. USCB scored three times in the fifth to move back in front and broke it open with a five-run sixth.
Joe Schaffhauser picked up the win in relief, allowing two runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings, and Blake Drew earned his school-record seventh save by giving up two runs in 2 1/3 innings.
The Sand Sharks are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Columbia to face Benedict College for a single game at 1 p.m.
NOTES: USCB was unranked in the preseason but jumped to 18th in the first NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll of the season, which was released Monday. It's the first time the Sand Sharks have appeared in the Top 25 since being ranked 21st in last year's preseason poll. … Johnny Cole drew his 28th walk of the season in Game 1, matching RJ Neal's single-season USCB record set in 2012. … USCB has slugged 14 home runs this season after hitting only eight all of last season.
