@USCBSoftball Drops Two At Georgia Gwinnett

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team dropped a pair of tough game at Georgia Gwinnett on Tuesday, falling 4-0 and 6-4.

The Sand Sharks left seven runners on base in the opener and were unable to dig out of an early hole after the Grizzlies scored three runs in the first. USCB had a chance to get back in it in the sixth but left the bases loaded and Georgia Gwinnett added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning.

Sammi Shaffren and Marissa Becker each had two hits and Maddie Byrd and Whitley Martin added a hit apiece for USCB. Kristy Cook (7-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits in six innings.

The Grizzlies also struck early in the second game, scoring in the first inning for a 1-0 lead, but USCB answered with three in the third with Taylor Triplett, Shelby Zipperer and Emily Pauley picking up RBIs.

Georgia Gwinnett got one run back in the bottom of the third and took control with a four-run sixth. Haley Brown's team-leading seventh home run in the seventh cut the deficit to two, but the Sand Sharks couldn't rally.

Becker had two hits and Shaffren, Brown and Triplett added one apiece for USCB. Ashlie Layman took the loss, allowing six runs on 12 hits over six innings.

USCB (10-8) returns home to face Bryan (Tenn.) for a doubleheader at noon Friday.
