MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team finished off a perfect weekend with a sweep of a Sun Conference doubleheader at St. Thomas on Sunday.
The Sand Sharks (16-8, 4-0 TSC) beat the Bobcats 5-3 and 6-2 to wrap up the first weekend of the conference slate, running their winning streak to six games.
Sam Boland hit a two-run homer in a four-run first inning, Missy Hughes had two hits and an RBI, and Sammi Shaffren and Maddie Byrd each added RBIs in the opener.
Kristy Cook (10-3) struck out seven and allowed three runs and six hits in a complete game. Cook took a perfect game into the fifth inning before the Bobcats broke through with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth. She retired two straight to strand the tying run at second in the sixth and worked around a leadoff single in the seventh.
USCB had to battle back from an early deficit in the second game, as the Bobcats plated two runs in the third. The Sand Sharks answered with three in the fourth on Mariaha Sanborn's home run and Sammi Shaffren's two-run single and led the rest of the way.
Shaffren scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to make it 4-2, and USCB tacked on two more runs in the seventh on Amanda Brown's RBI single and Hughes' RBI double.
Kendall Jumper (3-1) picked up her third win of the week, striking out six and allowing two runs and six hits in a complete game. Sanborn, Boland and Hughes each had two hits in the finale.
The Sand Sharks are back in action Wednesday, hosting Middle Georgia for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
