@USCBSoftball Sweeps ERAU To Run Win Streak To 8

HARDEEVILLE — The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team continued its perfect start to Sun Conference play, sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Embry-Riddle on Sunday at Richard Gray Sports Complex.

The 24th-ranked Sand Sharks won the opener 4-0 before rallying for a 10-6 victory in the finale to run their winning streak to eight games. USCB (18-8, 6-0 TSC) improved to 7-0 all-time against the Eagles.

Kristy Cook (11-2) tossed a three-hit shutout in the first game, allowing only one hit after the first inning and retiring the final 12 batters of the game.

USCB opened the scoring in the fourth when Taylor Triplett knocked in Sammi Shaffren and came around to score on Sam Boland's RBI double for a 2-0 lead. Haley Brown added a two-run homer — her team-leading 11th of the season — in the fifth.

The Sand Sharks smacked 15 hits in the second game, including a two-run homer from Triplett and a solo shot from Shelby Zipperer. Mariaha Sanborn went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Triplett was 2-for-4 with three RBIs as every starter recorded at least one hit. Shaffren, Amanda Brown and Missy Hughes each added two hits for USCB.

Freshman Allie Rogers (1-0) allowed two runs over three innings in relief to pick up her first collegiate win and Cook pitched the seventh to nail down the sweep.

The Sand Sharks host Georgia Gwinnett for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tuesday before welcoming No. 10 Thomas for a Sun Conference showdown at noon Friday.
