@USCBSoftball Blanks Coastal Georgia Twice, Runs Streak To 16

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team ran its winning streak to a school-record 16 games Friday, beating Coastal Georgia 5-0 and 9-0.

The 14th-ranked Sand Sharks (26-8) got a four-hitter from Kristy Cook in the opener and a three-hitter from Ashlie Layman in the finale and have notched five consecutive shutouts.

Haley Brown went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer — her team-leading 13th of the season — and Shelby Zipperer had a solo shot among her two hits in the first game. Missy Hughes had two hits and an RBI, and Maddie Byrd and Marissa Becker each added a pair of hits.

Byrd hit her 10th homer of the season and drove in three runs in the second game, while Hughes had three hits and scored twice, Shaffren had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, and Mariaha Sanborn added two hits and two RBIs.

Zipperer opened the scoring in the first game with a homer leading off the second, and Becker came home on Hughes' infield single later in the inning. Brown's three-run blast in the fourth broke it open. That was plenty of support for Cook (15-2), who struck out four and allowed four hits and one walk over seven innings.

The Sand Sharks used two big innings to put away the Mariners in the finale, scoring five runs in the second and four in the sixth to invoke the eight-run mercy rule. Sanborn's two-run single was the big hit in the five-run second and Byrd's two-run blast capped the four-run sixth. Layman (6-5) struck out six and gave up three singles and two walks over six innings.

The Sand Sharks look to remain unbeaten at home and undefeated in Sun Conference play when they host Webber International for a doubleheader at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
