HARDEEVILLE — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team split a doubleheader with sixth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett on Friday, winning 10-2 in the opener before falling 13-10 in the finale at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
The Sand Sharks jumped on the Grizzlies early and received terrific pitching from Junior Delatorre and Blake Drew in the first game, while Ashly Morris hit a grand slam and a two-run blast to lead a USCB comeback before the Sand Sharks fell short in the nightcap.
Delatorre (6-2) and Drew combined to hold one of the NAIA's top offensive teams to six hits, as Delatorre compiled a career-high 11 strikeouts and surrendered one run on four hits with four walks in 6 1/3 innings, while Drew gave up one run on two hits over 2 2/3 innings to finish it off.
Josh Reinhart had three hits and two RBIs, Morris knocked in two runs and scored two, and Chaztin Venezia added two hits and an RBI for USCB.
The Grizzlies took a 12-2 lead after two innings in the second game, but USCB battled back thanks to Morris' big bat. His grand slam to center in the sixth cut it to 13-8, and he added a two-run shot to left-center in the eighth to make it a three-run game.
Morris and Kyle Thompson each scored four runs, Johnny Cole was 3-for-4 with an RBI and John Cloyd and Michael Johnson each had two hits for USCB.
The series finale is scheduled for noon Saturday.
