COCHRAN, Ga. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team ran its winning streak to 14 games on Tuesday, beating Middle Georgia State 3-0 and 8-0.
Kristy Cook tossed a five-hit shutout in the opener and Ashlie Layman pitched a five-inning five-hitter in the nightcap as the Sand Sharks tied the longest winning streak in program history.
Haley Brown went 3-for-4 and Mariaha Sanborn drove in two runs in the first game, and Sanborn had two homers and three RBIs while Maddie Byrd added a homer and three RBIs in the second game.
The Sand Sharks (24-8) broke open a scoreless first game with three runs in the third, as Sanborn knocked in two with a double and scored on Sam Boland's single. That was plenty of support for Cook (14-2), who didn't allow a hit until the fourth and finished with four strikeouts and two walks.
USCB's bats didn't take as long to warm up in the second game, as Sanborn blasted a two-run homer in the first inning and followed Byrd's two-run blast with a solo shot in the third to make it 5-0. The Sand Sharks tacked on three more in the fourth on RBI singles from Missy Hughes and Bailey Craven and a bases-loaded walk to Byrd.
Layman worked out of a jam to leave the bases loaded in the fourth and sat down the Knights in order in the fifth. She finished with six strikeouts and four walks.
The Sand Sharks, who jumped eight spots to No. 14 in this week's NAIA Softball Coaches Top 25 Poll, are back in action Friday at Coastal Georgia before returning home to host Webber International in a Sun Conference doubleheader at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
