FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team forced No. 2 seed Embry-Riddle to extra innings before falling 2-1 in 10 innings in its first game at the Sun Conference Tournament on Friday.
The fifth-seeded Sand Sharks got two hits and an RBI from
Alex Bonilla and a gutsy performance from senior pitcher
Junior Delatorre, but couldn't finish the upset. Delatorre walked eight over seven innings, but he struck out nine and limited the Eagles to one run and five hits, repeatedly working out of jams.
Embry-Riddle stranded 16 runners but took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on Tobias Moreno's RBI single. The Sand Sharks answered in the bottom of the inning when Bonilla singled home
John Cloyd to tie it at 1.
That's where it remained until the 10
th, when the Eagles put together a two-out rally against USCB's
Blake Drew. Moreno and Jake Cavender started the rally with back-to-back two-out singles and advanced on two wild pitches.
The Sand Sharks (32-20) will face top-seeded Northwood in an elimination game at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Seahawks were upset 3-1 by No. 6 seed Thomas on Friday.
