FORT MYERS, Fla. — The University of South Carolina Beaufort baseball team's season wrapped up Sunday when the Sand Sharks were eliminated from the Sun Conference Tournament with an 11-1 loss to Southeastern at City of Palms park.
USCB (33-21) took a depleted pitching staff into the contest after going to extra innings in each of its first two games of the tournament — a 2-1 loss to Embry-Riddle on Friday and a 10-8 victory over top-seeded Northwood on Saturday. The Fire (38-18) took advantage, scoring three runs in the first and six in the third to build an insurmountable lead.
Nick Payne went 2-for-2 and drove in the lone run for the Sand Sharks, while Josh Reinhart added two hits.
Southeastern's Willi Martin went 3-for-5 with two homers and four RBIs.
USCB's 33 wins marked its most since the 2012 team finished 41-19 and reached the NAIA World Series and tied for the third-highest win total in program history.
"I'm proud of this team," USCB coach Bryan Lewallyn said. "We just finally ran out of gas, but those guys used everything in the tank."
