BLUFFTON, S.C. – The sound of the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" over the speakers at Fin Land Field drowned out a spirited – and frustrated – halftime speech from USCB women's soccer coach Ed Heberling on Tuesday afternoon.
Whatever Heberling imparted to his team clearly hit the mark, as the Sand Sharks erupted for six goals in a satisfying second half to claim a 6-0 victory over visiting Warner.
"Thank you to the girls for coming out strong after the half and putting up our most goals of the season," Heberling said. "We were able to wear down their team with our depth, and it paid off."
All six goals came from different players and four different players recorded assists, as the Sand Sharks outshot the Royals 30-2 and held a 17-1 edge in shots on goal.
After a discouraging first half in which USCB was unable to capitalize on numerous scoring chances, the Sand Sharks finally broke through with a penalty kick in the 48th minute. Brooke Newman was pulled down in the box to earn the penalty, which Karen Pimentel converted by beating the diving goalkeeper to her right.
Taylor Superior made a strong defensive play and blasted a left-footed shot past the keeper in the 63rd minute to add to the lead, and Hanna Crist scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Cameron Croney-Clark just over four minutes later.
Croney-Clark added a goal of her own in the 83rd minute, running down a ball from Kelsey Kersey on the right flank before cutting back inside and placing a shot past the keeper.
The Sand Sharks made it 5-0 just two minutes later, as Elin Sturesson made a long run and laid off a pass to Brittany Lorentz, who drilled a beautiful strike to the upper-left corner for her first goal of the year. USCB capped the scoring in the 87th minute, as Karen Pimentel threaded a pass to Sam Satterlee, whose shot was deflected but still found its way into the net.
The six goals marked the most for USCB since a 6-1 win at Florida Memorial last season and gave the Sand Sharks 36 goals for the season, tying the 2012 team for the most in program history.
"I'm especially happy for Hanna and Brittney to get a goal – both their first of the season," Heberling said. "We need to take this momentum into the game Friday at Webber International and hopefully keep it going into the postseason."
The Sand Sharks are in fifth place in the Sun Conference standings and can clinch a spot in the seven-team conference tournament with at least a tie Friday or if Ave Maria fails to win any of its three remaining games.
BOJANGLES' PLAYER OF THE GAME
Elin Sturesson
Freshman • Defender • Angelholm, Sweden
Sturesson was dominant at her center back position in the first half, helping the Sand Sharks hold the Royals without a shot for the first 45 minutes, and her move to forward to begin the second half sparked the attack to life. Sturesson's energy was catalyst for the six-goal second half, during which she contributed an assist.
