Pac Picks Up First Win As @USCBSoftball Splits With Coastal Georgia

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The USCB softball team split a doubleheader at Coastal Georgia on Wednesday, dropping the opener 5-1 before rebounding for a 3-2 victory in the finale.

The Sand Sharks outhit the Mariners 9-6 in the first game but couldn't come through with runners in scoring position, leaving nine on base.

Coastal Georgia's Katie Burns opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the second inning and added a two-run single in the sixth.

USCB loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth, and Taylor Boyett cut the deficit to 2-1 with an RBI single, but the Sand Sharks left the bases loaded. The Sand Sharks stranded two more runners in the sixth, and Coastal Georgia plated three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning.

Whitley Martin went 3-for-3 and scored the lone run for USCB. Ashlie Layman was tagged with the loss, striking out seven while allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits over six innings.

The Mariners took an early lead in the second game, as well, scoring on Taylor Horne's RBI double in the first and Kaycee Twomey's run-scoring single in the second for a 2-0 advantage.

The Sand Sharks were able to string together a rally in the fourth, though, as Kayla Boyle singled home a run and the tying run scored when Martin reached on an error. Pinch-hitter Emma Erwin delivered an RBI single later in the inning to plate Boyle with the eventual winning run.

Freshman Abby Pac earned her first collegiate win with 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, striking out five and allowing only one baserunner, who quickly was erased by a double play in the seventh inning.

The Sand Sharks are back in action this weekend at the NAIA Spring Break Softball event in Plant City, Fla. USCB will face Middle Georgia at 12:30 p.m. and Cumberland (Tenn.) at 3 p.m. on Saturday and take on Martin Methodist (Tenn.) at 10:30 a.m. and Edward Waters (Fla.) at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
