LAKE WALES - The USCB baseball team put an exclamation mark on its Sun Conference championship season Saturday, beating Warner 5-2 to match the school record for victories in a season.
The Sand Sharks (41-10, 20-4 TSC) won the season series with every Sun Conference opponent this season and claimed the regular-season crown by four games over St. Thomas and Webber International.
USCB led throughout the game Saturday, scoring three runs in he first and making the lead stand up. The Royals scored single runs in the third and fourth to cut it to 3-2, but the Sand Sharks tacked on a run on
Brandon Joyce's RBI groundout in the fifth and another on
John Cloyd's sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Julio De Pena (5-3) earned the win, allowing two runs and seven hits over six innings.
Forrest Kirsch worked two scoreless frames and
Blake Drew shut out the Royals in the ninth for his eighth save, matching his own school record set last season.
USCB will be the No. 1 seed in the Sun Conference Tournament and will face No. 6 seed Warner in the opening game at 11 a.m. Friday.
