The USCB women's soccer team scored a satisfying road win Saturday, as junior Hayley Pina scored two goals and became the program's all-time points leader in a 4-2 victory at Middle Georgia.
The Sand Sharks erased the frustration of three consecutive losses and back-to-back shutouts in a major way, and they wasted little time in doing so. Pina put her head to a Brooke Newman corner kick to open the scoring in the 12th minute and added a second goal on an assist from Poppy Miller in the 14th to get USCB off and running.
"The team played extremely well and followed the game plan tonight," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "Hayley's diving header off a corner kick was the catalyst for our team and gave us confidence, and her second goal gave us a little breathing room until halftime."
The Sand Sharks picked up where they left off in the second half, with Taylor Superior scoring off an assist from Caroline Bowman in the 62nd minute for a 3-0 lead before a flurry of goals made for a wild finish.
The Knights' Erika Back scored to cut into the lead in the 72nd minute, but Superior returned the favor with an assist for Bowman as USCB answered in the 79th to make it 4-1. Middle Georgia responded with Sam Silva's goal a minute later but couldn't draw any closer.
"We came out flat in the second half and a couple of defensive miscues allowed them to close the gap, but we held strong," Heberling said. "It was great to see 'Soup' and 'Bowie' get on the board."
Several players were pressed into action at new positions due to numerous players being held out with injuries or illnesses. Nonetheless, the Sand Sharks outshot the Knights 21-10 and had a 17-7 edge in shots on goal. Freshman Moa Johansson made her collegiate debut in goal, stopping five shots.
"I am proud of the team effort tonight," Heberling said. "Even though we were down numerous players, we found a way to win. This group has stuck together and fought hard."
The Sand Sharks (3-3) are back in action Wednesday with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Columbia College.
