Bluffton, SC-- In front of a raucous homecoming crowd, the USCB women's soccer team put together its highest scoring output since defeating Florida Christian 14-0 in 2012.
Senior
Hayley Pina led the Sand Sharks in the first half, contributing to the first four goals of the match. It didn't take Piña 5 minutes to score her 10th goal of the season off an assist from
Melissa Fichtner. Piña continued the scoring when she put in her second goal of the match in the 9th minute, unassisted, and she continued adding points to her day's totals 5 minutes later when she found fellow senior,
MJ Orduna, standing alone the top of the box. Orduña's strike found the back of the net with a helpful misdirection from an Ave Maria defender. Piña would finish her scoring in style when she struck a full volley into the back of the net from a
Hanna Crist corner kick.
The first half scoring saw more points from the Sand Sharks' senior class when
Sarah Withers finished a rebound to score her second goal in as many games. Orduña would then find her way back into the box score after taking a pass from
Anna Gignilliat and making no mistake in blowing the ball by goalkeeper Erica Larson.
The Sand Sharks came out on fire again after the break when
Rileigh Olsen added the 7th goal of the match off a rebound from a corner kick. It took only ten minutes for the Sand Sharks to strike again. The combination play down the left flank of
Karen Pimentel to Piña back Pimentel and then to Gignilliat, would make the score 8-0.
The visiting Gyrenes continued to attempt the counter-attack, and their efforts paid off in the 68th minute when Lauren Campoe put a long shot over the head of Sand Shark goalkeeper,
Moa Johansson.Â
Freshman
Hannah Salus would cap off the scoring for USCB in the 79th minute when Withers found Orduña who then found Salus down the left side.
Regarding the team's performance this afternoon, Coach
Ed Heberling said, "After the tough loss to SCAD earlier in the week we need this one. The team came out ready to play, and it showed in front of our great crowd. Our attack found success early and kept pressing throughout. Credit to AMU as they never quit and kept pushing. They capitalized on our mistake today and showed a lot of heart. We have an important match coming up Wednesday and need to focus on a Webber that is always tough to beat."
The Sand Sharks travel to Webber University (Fla.) on Wednesday afternoon for a 1 PM kickoff.
