In a match marked by wild momentum swings, the USCB soccer team came up on the short end of a 3-2 final against visiting Georgetown (Ky.) on Sunday at Fin Land Field.
The Tigers led 1-0 at halftime on Jodi DeJohn's goal on a rebound in the 34th minute, and Georgetown controlled possession for most of the first 50 minutes. USCB showed a spark early in the second half, though, and all-time leading scorer Hayley Pina scored a pair of goals in a span of 80 seconds to give the Sand Sharks a short-lived lead.
Pina hit a strike into the upper-left corner of the net to finish an assist from Elin Sturesson for the equalizer in the 52nd minute, and she beat the keeper to the far post to take advantage of a through-ball from Hannah Salus 1:20 later for a 2-1 advantage.
The Tigers responded, though, and Bethany Massey answered with two goals of her own in a span of less than four minutes, tying it in the 60th minute and netting the game-winner in the 64th.
"This was a disappointing result for us," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "Although we didn't play our best, I felt we still had the opportunity to walk away with the win. They had a little more in the tank than we did, and you could see they were able to beat us to more balls."
The Sand Sharks continue their homestand this week, hosting Columbia (S.C.) at 5 p.m. Thursday and Columbia International at 1 p.m. Saturday.
