Hardeeville, SC-- The USCB softball team held Strike Out Cancer Day at the park today. Highlighting the day was USCB's Dr. Jayne Violette throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before the first game. Clips of Dr. Violette throwing out the first pitch can be found below.
Throughout the restof the evening USCB was unable to overcome the power of the NAIA's number one ranked team, Georgia Gwinnett College this evening at Richard Gray Sports Complex, falling in the double-header, 3-8 and 2-11.
The Grizzlies were able to jump ahead of the Sand Sharks in game one, when Elyssa Melton started the three-run inning with an RBI-single through the left side. GGC scored another run in the fourth before Brianna Fickes hit a three-run shot over the right field fence in the fifth inning.
The Sand Sharks put together a three-run inning of their own in the sixth, when
Canyon Crosby started things off with a single through the right side.
Kaitlyn O'Hearn then doubled to left field and advanced Crosby to third.
Melina Martinez earned a walk in her appearance, and
Alexa Moore was able to reach on a fielding error and Crosby was able to come across the plate.
Carrie Cochran then added a two-RBI single through the right side, scoring O'Hearn and Martinez. Cochran went on to steal second before the Grizzles were able to retire the side.
Game one ended in favor of GGC 8-3.
USCB entered the bottom half of first inning in game two down 0-2. The Sand Sharks got to work, though, when
Kayla Boyle knocked a two-RBI double through the middle to score
Rachel Frankhouser and
Taylor Boykin. Frankhouser reached on a leadoff walk and Boykin had an infield single to shortstop. The offense sputtered there though for the Sand Sharks as they were only able to grab one more hit the rest of the way in game two.
USCB will be traveling down to College of Coastal Georgia this Wednesday, where they hope to get revenge on the Mariners. CCGA was able to take both games from USCB when they visited Hardeeville a couple of weeks ago.
