Miami Gardens, FL-- The USCB softball team went on the road to southern Florida to face St. Thomas University this evening. The Sand Sharks took game one 3-0 and dropped the second game 3-4.
Game One
USCBÂ found what would prove to be the winning run in the fifth inning.
Kylie Kelly got the bats going with a leadoff single to right field.
Melina Martinez reached on a fielder's choice that ended Kelly's time around the bags before Martinez then stole second.
Carrie Cochran then doubled to left field, driving in Martinez.
The Sand Sharks then added two more runs in the sixth inning.
Kayla Boyle doubled to left field,
Alexa Moore reached first on an error that took Boyle to third, and then
Caroline Heaton, doing pinch-running duties for Moore, stole second. The heads-up base running for USCBÂ continued when Boyle was able to score on an error that allowed Heaton to then steal third.
Canyon Crosby earned a walk to first and Heaton attempted to steal home but was thrown out on the play. Crosby was then driven in off a Kelly double to left field.
Abby Pac picked up her 14th win of the year in the circle, going the complete game. Pac surrendered zero runs on four hits, while striking out two.
In game one,
Rachel Frankhouser rewrote the USCB single-season record for stolen bases. Frankhouser passed the previous mark of 20 stolen bases in a year, set in 2012, by Barbara Phillips.
Game Two
In game two, things were written a bit differently for USCB. St. Thomas was able to jump to the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Sand Sharks got the run back in the top of the second off an RBI-single from Martinez that plated Kelly.
The Sand Sharks then found two more runs in the top of the sixth to take the 3-1 lead. Martinez picked up her second and third RBI's of the game when she hit a double into right field that scored Crosby and
Kaitlyn O'Hearn.
The Bobcats were able to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth before being able to generate their fourth run in the bottom of the seventh.
In the circle,
Maria Molloseau went 4.0 innings, giving up one run on six hits, while walking one and striking out one.
USCB will remain in southern Florida as they now travel to Keiser University for a double-header set for Saturday at 12 pm.
