Lake Wales, FL—The USCB women's soccer team suffered their second Sun Conference loss this evening in overtime to Warner University by a 2-1 margin.
The Sand Sharks started the game with much of the possession, forcing the Royals to play over-the-top for much of the early going. It was the team's leading-scorer,
Hannah Salus, who saw the best scoring chance in the first few minutes, but it snuck just over the crossbar.
The next fifteen minutes saw the possession swing in favor of the Royals, who continued having trouble moving ball forward on the ground and resorted to continue forcing it over the top. Warner's best scoring chance came in the 18
th minute, but junior goalkeeper
Logan Leask forced Samantha Warren's shot high.
The remainder of the half was controlled by the Royals, firing five more shots (3 on goal) at Leask, who stopped all three and took the 0-0 score into the break.
Coming out of the half, in a way only sports can offer, a dramatic swing of momentum took only moments. A missed clearing attempt by the back line in the 47
th minute gave Warner a chance to take the lead, but
Kaylee Kumar forced the Royals' shot just wide of an outstretched Leask. Off the ensuing goal kick, the Sand Sharks quickly marched the ball up the field, and
Maria Nunez was able to find
Anna Gignilliat crashing the near post. Gignilliat made no mistake in tucking the ball away for a 1-0 lead.
It took only 12 minutes for the Royals to respond, though. Warren made no mistake off another missed clearing attempt by the Sand Sharks, and this time she made them pay, taking the ball in one-on-one with Leask and then slipping it home to tie the match 1-1.
After a back-and-forth remainder of the second half, the score remained knotted at one apiece.
In overtime Warren struck again in the 96
th minute, after finding the ball inside the 18, making sure she ended them game there.
The Sand Sharks will be looking to bounce back at home this Saturday, September 29, when they play host to Florida Memorial University. Kick off is set for 4:00 pm.
