Hardeeville, SC-- The Sand Sharks got off on the right foot under first-year head coach
Bailey Wigness, winning both games of a the season-opening double-header against the visiting Koalas of Columbia College (SC) on Friday night at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
Game One Notes:
- USCB jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Rachel Frankhouser reached bunt single and then promptly stole second base.
- Natassja Hatcher notched the season's first RBI to right center, bringing in Frankhouser for 2019's first run.
- USCB piled up three more hits in the third, but they were unable to bring any more runners across home.
- Frankhouser found her way to first again in the fourth off an infield single to shortstop and then stole her second base off the young season.
- Melina Martinez then had her own bunt single that eventually led to Frankhouser coming in off a Koala miscue.
- USCB was 7 for 23, stranding 8.
- In the circle, senior Abby Pac went 7.0 innings, giving up 6 hits and notching 8 strikeouts.
Game Two Notes:
- Columbia College took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when leadoff batter McKenzie Schaller singled, stole second, and then found her way home off an error.
- USCB turned things around in the bottom of the second with Frankhouser reaching first on a walk and reached second on a sacrifice bunt from Alexa Moore.
- Kylie Kelly singled to right field, pushing Frankhouser to third, and Martinez then hit an RBI single down the right line, brining Frankhouser across home plate for the third time on the evening.
- Kayla Boyle then singled through the right side to bring in Kelly and plate the go-ahead run.
- The Sand Sharks tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth, with Frankhouser, Kelly, Taylor Boykin, and Martinez scoring.
- The Koalas plated two more runs in the top of the seventh.
- Maria Molloseau went the complete game, giving up 6 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), while fanning 5.
