BRUNSWICK, Ga. - After sweeping a pair of The Sun Conference victories last week against Southeastern, USCB softball dropped a pair of league games at Coastal Georgia, 5-3 and 3-1, on Wednesday at Brunswick High School.
INSIDE THE GAME ONE BOX SCORE
Shania Domingue - 2-for-4, two RBIs
Taylor Boykin - 2-for-4, one run
Kayla Boyle - 1-for-3, double, one RBI
Canyon Crosby - two innings, no earned runs
HOW GAME ONE HAPPENED
Coastal Georgia opened the doubleheader with a trio of runs in the home half of the first inning. Highlighting the three-run inning for the Mariners was a two-run homer from Kylie Young.Â
Both teams put runners on base in the second but left them stranded.Â
The Sand Shark offense woke up in the third inning with one out. With the bases loaded, Boyle walked to give USCB its first run of the game. Domingue made it a one-run game, 3-2, via her single to left center. That was all the Sand Sharks could muster, as the next two Sand Sharks went down in order.
USCB tied the game in the fifth, as Domingue came up in the clutch again. Rachel Frankhouser started the rally with a one-out walk, and Boyle put two runners in scoring position with her first double of the game. Domingue smacked a single through the left side to plate Domingue and knot the game at 3-all.
Coastal Georgia regained the lead in the fifth, as the Mariners plated two runs off bases-loaded situations.
Just an inning later, USCB had a chance to tie the game again. Kaitlyn O'Hearn walked to lead off, and Boykin singled on a bunt. Frankhouser loaded the bases with two outs, but the Mariners made a pitching change and left the bases loaded in the inning.Â
The Sand Sharks tried to mount a comeback in the seventh but couldn't tally a run in the final inning.Â
INSIDE THE GAME TWO BOX SCORE
Sloan Ducey - six innings, six hits, three runs, four strikeouts, one walk
Crosby - 1-for-3, double
Frankhouser - 0-for-3, one RBI, one walk
HOW GAME TWO HAPPENED
The second game of the conference doubleheader was a pitching duel for both squads. In fact, the two teams didn't tally a hit for the first two and a half innings.Â
Coastal Georgia broke that streak in the bottom of the third with two consecutive singles to start the frame. After a sacrifice bunt, Waldron doubled to left field to open the scoring, 2-0.
The Sand Sharks had a chance with two outs in the fourth, as they had a pair of runners on base. Crosby doubled, and O'Hearn reached on a fielding error. However, they were left stranded on base.
Coastal Georgia added a lone run in the fourth to advance the lead to three, 3-0.
USCB again threatened in the final inning, and they were able to put a scare in the Coastal Georgia squad. After two Sand Sharks reaching base safely, Haley Hawkins singled through the left side to load the bases. The Mariners made a pitching change and forced Frankhouser in to a RBI groundout to make the game 3-1. With two outs, the Sand Sharks had two runners in scoring position, but Boyle grounded out to end the game.
