Softball Walks Off on Senior Day, Splits Doubleheader in Regular-Season Finale

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - On Senior Day, the USCB softball team used a walkoff in game two of the doubleheader to split with Coastal Georgia, 5-2 and 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Richard Gray Stadium.

INSIDE THE GAME ONE BOX SCORE

Kayla Boyle - 4-for-4, one run

Taylor Boykin and Kaitlyn O'Hearn - 2-for-4, one RBI each

Melina Martinez - 2-for-3, one run

HOW GAME ONE HAPPENED

USCB opened the scoring in the home half of the first, as O'Hearn dropped a RBI single down the right field line. Boykin and Boyle started the rally with back-to-back infield singles, and after a flyout and a fielder's choice, O'Hearn dropped a single to plate Boyle from second base.

Just an inning later, the Sand Sharks tallied another two-out, RBI hit, as Boykin recorded the clutch base hit. Emily Martin and Martinez started the inning with consecutive singles. After a base running miscue, Martinez swiped second to move into scoring position, and Boyle made it hurt with a single to right field to advance the USCB lead to two, 2-0.

The two team's offenses were held in check in the third and fourth innings, but Coastal Georgia cut the deficit in half with a RBI single from Kensey Soloman in the fifth inning. An inning later, the Mariners tied the game at 2-all, as Cevana Wood connected with a solo homer to left field.

In the final frame, Coastal Georgia plated three runs off three hits. Highlighting the inning was a two-run homer from pitcher Paige Alt to take the 5-2 lead.

USCB tried to rally in the seventh, as Boyle collected a hit, but the senior was left stranded.

INSIDE THE GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Shania Domingue - 3-for-4, two RBIs

Boykin - 2-for-2, three runs, one double, one walk, two stolen bases

Boyle - 2-for-4, one RBI, one run

Alexa Moore - 2-for-3

HOW GAME TWO HAPPENED

The Sand Sharks again used early offense, as Boykin cracked a leadoff double down the left field line. After advancing to third on a groundout, Domingue connected with a RBI hit to give USCB the 1-0 lead.

The Mariners tried to knot the contest in the top of the second, but Crosby pitched out of trouble and left two Mariners stranded in scoring position.

The two clubs had chances to plate runs in the third frame, as they combined for three runners left on base.

In the top of the fourth, Coastal Georgia gained its first lead of the game, as Soloman cracked a two-run homer to center. The long ball gave the Mariners the 2-1 lead.

After quick innings from both clubs, USCB knotted the game thanks to a clutch, two-out base knock from Domingue. Boykin walked and swiped second to move in to scoring position. After a foul out, Domingue dropped a RBI single to left to tie the game, 2-2.

After a scoreless sixth inning for both clubs, the Mariners regained the lead off a pinch-hit, run-scoring single from KailiAnn Sadeski.

Down 3-2, USCB used late heroics to win the game, 4-3. Boykin tallied a bunt base hit with one out to start the rally. After swiping second base, Boyle crushed a single up the middle to tie the game at 3-all. Domingue followed with a single to put two runners on base, and the two Sand Sharks advanced 60 feet thanks to a wild pitch. Wanting to walk the bases loaded, the Mariner pitcher threw the ball away, which allowed Boyle to score on the second straight wild pitch. The miscue gave the Sand Sharks the one-run victory.
