Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

USCB Matches Shutout Record With 3-0 Victory

AMERICUS, Ga. - Behind three different Sand Sharks tallying a goal, USCB soccer handed Georgia Southwestern a 3-0 defeat, as USCB extends its winning streak to three straight games.

The three straight shutout victories matches the longest shutout streak in program history. USCB pitched three shutout wins during the 2012 season, when it held Johnson & Wales, Southeastern and Ave Maria scoreless.

Anna Gignilliat was one of the three Sand Sharks to score on Saturday, and she continued to move up the USCB record books. The senior is now in sole possession of third place in career goals scored with 14. She is now two goals away from matching Alexa Muffley, who is second all-time at USCB.

Inside The Box Score

Gignilliat - one goal, third straight game with a goal

Brooke Newman - one goal, first goal this year, fifth of her career at USCB

Allison Schaffer - one goal, second straight game with a goal

Julia Gherardi - one assist, second assist this year

Gabriella Baldo - one assist, first assist at USCB

How It Happened

Gignilliat kept up USCB's tradition of scoring within the first eight minutes of the opening kickoff, as the senior slotted her sixth goal of the year in the eighth minute of the contest. USCB scored the first goal of the game against South Carolina State in the sixth minute and in the first minute at Erskine.

Georgia Southwestern had several chances at goal for the next 15 minutes, as the Canes connected with four shots in that stretch. Fortunately, USCB fended off the GSW attack and kept the Canes off the scoreboard.

USCB doubled its lead in the 33rd minute when Newman tallied her first goal of the year. Freshman forward Baldo earned the assist, which was her first point in a USCB uniform.

The Sand Sharks peppered the net for the next 13 minutes, but all of the attempts either went wide of the net or were saved.

At the halftime break, USCB held the 2-0 lead on the scoreboard and the 7-5 advantage in shots taken.

The Sand Sharks continued their momentum from the first half, as they ripped two shots on goal in the first three minutes of the second half. However, both shots were saved by the GSW goalkeeper.

In the 77th minute, USCB was awarded a penalty, as the Sand Sharks were fouled within the 18-yard box. Schaffer took the penalty kick and converted to extend USCB's lead to three, 3-0. It was the second straight game Schaffer has converted on a penalty kick.

The Sand Shark defense continued to limit the chances for Georgia Southwestern, as the Canes weren't able to take a shot in the final 13 minutes of regulation.
