Game Recap: Baseball |

Humphrey Matches School Single-Game Record in Doubleheader Defeat

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - Despite Alexander Humphrey tying a school record for triples in a game (two), USCB baseball dropped the final two games of the three-game set to Florida Memorial, 3-2 and 12-8, on Saturday at Richard Gray Stadium.

With his two triples in game one of the doubleheader, Humphrey is now one of three Sand Sharks to accomplish that feat. The most recent Sand Shark to hit two triples in a game was Larry Perry against Edward Waters during the 2010 season. Gabe Torres was the other Sand Shark, as he connected with two triples versus Shawnee State during that same season.

INSIDE THE GAME ONE BOX SCORE

Humphrey - 2-for-4, two triples (matched school record), one RBI

Leandy Castro - 1-for-3, one run

Keith Olmo and Tavaris Terrell - one hit and one walk each

Tanner Davis - 5.1 innings, one run, five hits, three strikeouts

Javier Saenz - one inning, one hit, no runs

HOW GAME ONE HAPPENED

Both teams had its leadoff batter reach base safely in the first two innings, but neither team plated runs during that stretch. In fact, the two clubs combined for six runners left on base.

Florida Memorial tallied the first runs of the contest in the third inning when James Spatafora and Jouseph Renovales led to runs. Spatafora hit into a double play, and Renovales touched home on a wild pitch.

After a quiet inning-and-a-half stretch, FMU added on its third run of the contest when Spatafora collected a RBI single to push the Lion lead to 3-0.

The Sand Shark offense finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh when Marino Sorbara came in to pinch hit for Daniel Searles. Sorbara connected with a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 game.

After leaving a pair of Lions on base in the top of the eighth, USCB made it a one-run game in the home half of the eighth. Castro started the rally with a single, and Humphrey roped his second triple of the game down the right field line to make it 3-2. USCB tried to tie the game but left the sophomore stranded at third.

USCB tried to muster a comeback, but a double play ended the game and sealed the 3-2 win for Florida Memorial.

INSIDE THE GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Nick Milhan - 2-for-5, one RBI, one run

Humphrey - 1-for-4, one RBI, two runs, one walk

Castro - 1-for-2, two runs, two walks

Terrell - 1-for-5, one RBI

Braxton Copley - 1.1 innings, no runs, no hits, three strikeouts

HOW GAME TWO HAPPENED

Similar to the first game of the league-opening series, the scoring started early and often for both teams. Florida Memorial jumped out to a 4-0 lead, as it took advantage of five hits and an error in the first frame.

USCB quickly responded with three runs off two hits and an error to make it a one-run contest, 4-3. Humphrey stroked a RBI single, while Castro scored on a FMU fielding error. Noah Matthews earned a RBI off a fielder's choice to end the scoring.

The Lions added a run with two outs in the top of the third to take a two-run lead early.

The next inning-and-a-half went 1-2-3 for USCB and FMU. That stretch ended when the Lions tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, as Renovales and Spatafora each earned RBIs in the frame.

After USCB left a pair of runners on base in the fourth, FMU added two more runs to take the six-run lead, 9-3.

USCB started to chip away at the deficit when it plated a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth. Milhan smacked a one-out, run-scoring single, and Melquan Depugh finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly. With the two run-scoring plays, USCB made it a 9-5 contest.

FMU retaliated in the top of eighth when it tacked on three insurance runs off three hits. Fortunately for USCB, it left the bases loaded to stop the damage in the frame.

The Sand Sharks didn't cave though, as they made it a close game in the ninth. Humphrey scored on a passed ball to open the scoring, and two batters later, Terrell grounded into a fielder's choice to score Kyran Russ from third. With one out, David Villafane grounded out to second and earned his first RBI of the game. USCB tried to keep the lineup turning, but Olmo struck out to end the rally.
