Sand Sharks Bow Out of Sun Conference Tournament

MIAMI GARDENS. Fla. - Despite a late chance to tie the game, the USCB women's soccer team bowed out of the Sun Conference Tournament with a 2-1 loss to No. 4 St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon at STU Soccer Field.

Inside The Box Score

Synne Bye-Andersen - one goal, two shots, two shots on goal

Mari Kalvatn - one assist, five shots, three shots on goal

Mariah Ruckdeschel - 90 minutes, 11 saves, two goals allowed

How It Happened

After feeling each other out, St. Thomas tallied the game's first goal in the ninth frame. Andrea Manzur was credited with the goal, as she shook off a USCB defender to find the bottom-right corner of the net. The goal put the Bobcats up 1-0 early.

For the next 11 minutes, STU peppered the USCB net, but Ruckdeschel made a save off five shots faced.

The Sand Sharks knotted the match at 1-all in the 21st minute. STU lost possession at midfield, as Lauren Wood poked the ball away. Kalvatn then shielded a Bobcat midfielder to retain the ball. After taking a bounce, she booted the ball downfield towards Bye-Andersen. Splitting two defenders, Bye-Andersen executed a perfectly-timed shot towards goal with a pressing goalkeeper. The ball rolled past the STU goalkeeper to make it a 1-1 contest.

The two clubs went back-and-forth for the next seven minutes, but in the 28th minute, the Sand Sharks made a defensive miscue that led to STU regaining the lead, 2-1.

St. Thomas had a couple more chances before halftime to advance the lead, but the match went to halftime with St. Thomas leading by one, 2-1.

In the first 10 minutes of the second half, Kalvatn had two chances to tie the game, but the attempts were saved and went high of net.

The Sand Sharks didn't attempt another shot until the 82nd minute. The 85th minute presented USCB with another huge opportunity to tie the game. A Sand Shark ripped a shot at goal, going 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper, but her shot hit the crossbar and went out of harm's way.

With the late scare, STU held on to the ball for most of the remaining time to seal the one-goal win, 2-1.
