HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning from both clubs, USCB's offense erupted for six runs in the top of the second to take the commanding lead. Mathew Morgan reached base on a dropped third strike, and Marino Sorbara pinch ran for his teammate. Ambrose followed with a single to put two runners on base. After a pop out to put runners at the corners, Ambrose stole second, and Tim Wood forced the bases loaded on a hit-by-pitch. Milhan worked a bases-loaded walk to make it a 1-0 game. Castro struck out, but a passed ball allowed Ambrose to touch home to double the lead. Sellers followed with a two-RBI double, which gave USCB the 4-0 advantage, and Humphrey connected with a two-run blast to cap off the six-run frame for USCB.Â
Thomas cut into the USCB lead in the home half of the third with a pair of runs.
The Sand Sharks regained one of the runs in the top of the fourth, when Humphrey collected another run-scoring hit to make the game 7-2.
The Night Hawks found their groove from the fourth to seventh inning, as they plated nine unanswered runs. With that success, TU took the 11-7 lead after seven complete.
After another scoreless inning, USCB's offense didn't cave, as it erupted for another six-spot in the top of the ninth. Sellers, Humphrey and Russ started the inning with three consecutive singles to force the bases loaded. After an out, Ambrose and Terrell walked to make it a two-run game. After a pitching change and a strikeout, Milhan reached base on a fielding error to score two runs, which gave USCB its second lead of the day - 12-11. Castro finished off the inning with a pivotal run to make the contest 13-11.
The Night Hawks scared the Sand Sharks in the bottom of the ninth. Brad Toxen smacked a two-out home run to make it a one-run game, but Krieghauser stayed strong on the mound to seal the one-run win - 13-12.
