HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - Behind stellar pitching and Sellars' home run and game-winning run, the USCB baseball team walked off on Tuesday in extra innings, 3-2, to hand St. Andrews its second loss of the 2022 season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Sand Shark pitchers - 10 innings, one earned run, nine hits, 12 strikeouts, 13 runners left on base
Clint Sellars - 2-for-3, two-run home run, double, two runs
Nikko Andre - 2-for-3, two singles
Brian Meyer - 1-for-5, one run
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first three innings flew by at Richard Gray Stadium. SAU had plenty of chances to score in that stretch but left six batters left on base.Â
Still tied at 0-0 after three-and-a-half innings, USCB finally broke the scoreless drought with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Meyer led off the inning with a single, and after an out, Sellars uncorked a two-run bomb to left to give USCB the 2-0 lead.Â
After leaving two Sand Sharks on base in the bottom of the fifth, SAU put its first run on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Greg Izzo touched home for the Knights via a throwing error.Â
The eighth inning featured a lot of traffic on the base paths, but again neither team could plate runs. SAU put two runners on base - a hit and an error - while the Sand Sharks couldn't take advantage of a hit and two errors. Despite the traffic, the game stayed at 2-1 after eight complete innings.Â
Looking to close out the game, St. Andrews had other plans, as it tied the game at 2-2. Noah Lawson came up with a clutch, two-out RBI to tie the game at 2-all.
USCB tried to walk off in the ninth but grounded into an unorthodox 5-3 double play to force extras.
Donavan Huneck worked out of another jam in the top of the 10th with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the 10th. He was able to keep the Knights off the scoreboard and force another walk-off chance for USCB.
In the bottom of the 10th, USCB recorded two quick outs - unfortunately for the Sand Sharks. However, Sellars came up clutch with a two-out double down the left field line. Kyran Russ was intentionally walked and then chaos ensued. Sellars advanced to third on a wild pitch. Looking to throw him out at third, the SAU catcher made an errant throw, which allowed Sellars to trot home and lift USCB to the 3-2 win.Â
