USCB drops first “River Rivalry” game to Tigers

SAVANNAH -- A new rivalry was born Tuesday night at Enmarket Arena in Savannah, but the Sand Sharks shot just 32 percent from the field compared to Savannah State's 43, falling to the Tigers 81-53.

Mahkayla Premo led the way offensively for USCB, posting her third double-digit scoring effort in four games to go along with four boards, three assists, and three steals while Janiyah Heyward notched her second straight double-figure game with 12 points and seven caroms.

"We played hard and got better," said coach Sharon Versyp. "We competed against a really good DII school. We'll continue to put work in and get better for Saturday."

A back-and-forth opening quarter saw eight lead changes. USCB held its largest lead of two-points with the score 11-9 when Rose drilled a triple from the wing. The Tigers tied it on the next possession, but Premo made it a 14-13 after driving to the basket for the layup. Arei'a Garrett gave the Sand Sharks a 15-14 advantage with a putback jumper. SSU converted two free throws and a jumper to end the quarter up three.

Savannah State controlled much of the second period, outscoring Beaufort by 10. Heyward's 12-footer gave the Sand Shark a one-point lead midway through the quarter, but the Tigers went on a 13-5 run, pushing the lead to double figures.

Following the break, SSU broke it open, taking a 20-point lead with seven minutes left in the quarter and would push the lead to as large as 24 heading into the final stanza.

USCB hung with the Tigers, scoring 15 in the quarter but ultimately fell 81-53.

The Sand Sharks return to the Rec Center on Saturday as they play Paine College with tip scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
