Heyward’s career-best 23 not enough as USCB falls to Tigers

JACKSONVILLE -- Janiyah Heyward posted a career-best 23 points along with seven rebounds but USCB's women's basketball team fell on the road Thursday night 66-56 to Edward Waters University.

Jada Young fell just two points shy of her second career double-double scoring eight points and collected 10 boards while Mahkayla Premo notched seven points and both Brielle Bartelt and Shaniya Rose scored six.

"Hard-fought game with a good team," said coach Sharon Versyp. "We had to battle from behind multiple times and were able to come back to tie it up. Unfortunately, the calls didn't fall our way there in the fourth. We'll continue to work and learn from every time out."

USCB went on a 10-2 run that took up much of the quarter, but once the Tigers went in man-to-man defense, Edward Waters forced turnovers on consecutive Sand Shark possessions, all while trimming Beaufort's lead to two. EWU took the lead after Kayla Morton knocked down two three-pointers. Sha'Kwanza Brown followed with one of her to make it a five-point Tiger advantage forcing Versyp to burn a timeout. Heyward broke the 13-0 with a layup and Rose followed with a floater cutting the lead back to single digits. Premo went coast-to-coast after picking one of her three rebounds in the half making it a six-point game, caping USCB's 9-2 run.

Heyward connected on two straight possessions cutting the Tigers lead to only one and Bartelt's jumper gave USCB a one-point lead. Edward Waters used a 16-5 run over the next six plus minutes, taking an eight-point lead. Heyward scored twice in the final minute, making it a 46-38 lead heading in the final quarter of play. Beaufort's defense picked it up forcing multiple turnovers as the Sand Sharks continued to chip away at the Tigers' lead. Bartelt converted a 13-footer to make it a one possession game. Back-to-back offensive fouls put EWU in the bonus and Kayla Horton connected a three-ball from the wing, giving Edward Waters an eight-point lead. The Tigers finished on a 7-5 run to close out the 66-56 final score.

The Sand Sharks are back in action on Saturday, December 9th as it'll begin the final stretch of its non-conference schedule against Regent University.
