Sand Sharks spectacular season ends in PKs at Lander in PBC Quarterfinals

GREENWOOD -- The Sand Shark women's soccer team phenomenal 2023 campaign concluded Monday evening after battling to a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes, before ultimately falling 6-5 in penalty kicks.

"What a season and game," coach Jay Harris said. "It has been an amazing journey, and I could not be prouder of this team. It was an evenly matched contest with two good teams competing at a high level."

Lander scored the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute after the Bearcats' Kaitlyn Thompson was able to sneak one past Emily Worrell, but USCB answered only five minutes later after Synne Bye-Andersen connected with Savanna Page who headed it in to score the equalizer.

The score remained deadlocked at one through regulation and overtime before heading to PKs to see who would go on to face top seeded North Georgia on Friday.

Kennedy Harris began for the Sand Sharks, finding the back of the net to move up 1-0. Lander answered, but Mari Kalvatn put Beaufort right back in front. Worrell came up big with a spectacular save to keep it at 2-1 and Bye-Andersen gave USCB a 3-1 lead. The Bearcats answered by scoring on their next attempt. Graysen Asher gave the lead back to the Sand Sharks, but Eva Kristjansdottir was denied the game-winner.

A new set of five came out to the field and it was Bella Esteves who put Beaufort in front. Lander answered and then denied Jenny Hesby before Rylee King ended the game.

"Unfortunately, we came up short in the penalties, but that takes nothing away from what we have achieved this year and the many memories we created with this special group."
