Kristjansdottir's hat trick leads Sand Shark's come from behind victory

BLUFFTON – USCB women's soccer team put a show together for an electric crowd at Fin Land Monday afternoon, but after being down 2-0 at halftime Eva Kristjansdottir found the back of the net three times, completing the Sand Shark's comeback to stun Shorter, 3-2.

"We started slow, but we were creating a ton of chances," said coach Jay Harris. "Ultimately, we came through and that's the most important thing. The team showed unity, character, coming back from two down. It's a very hard thing to do."

USCB kept the pressure throughout the first half, controlling the ball for most of the half, but it was the Hawks that broke through in the 14th minute as Kate Crunkleton netted the first goal placing the ball out of the reach of Worrell. She added a second in the 32nd minute, putting Beaufort down two.

The Sand Sharks had several opportunities, with Savanna Page having multiple 1-v-1 chances with the Hawk's keeper, but Eccleston came up strong with multiple saves, keeping USCB off the board.

With the clock ticking down, Beaufort couldn't find the back of the net, that was until Kristjansdottir lined up for a free kick just outside of the box and drilled home the 16-yard shot in the bottom left of the goal, putting the Sand Sharks on the board. The offensive attack continued and with just under 11 minutes remaining, the Kópavogur, Iceland native found the back of the net again, this time being in the right place at the right time to pick up the loose ball and tying the game at two.

"I'm super happy that we were able to come back," Kristjansdottir said. "It's not easy being down 2-0 on our home field with a large crowd. I'm very proud of our players both on and off the field."
USCB continued to keep the pressure on the Hawk's defense for the next seven minutes, but Shorter's back line thwarted several scoring chances but with 2:37 left on the clock Kennedy Harris was fouled inside the box, setting up a potential game-winning penalty shot.

Kristjansdottir picked up the ball and placed it on the penalty spot and finished off a historic afternoon, completing the hat trick and sending the fans in attendance at Fin Land Field home happy.
"I just decided to take the PK, we've been taking PKs at practice, and I've always been confident in my ability to take penalty shots and I'm used to the pressure, and it worked out great."
With the victory, the Sand Sharks have started the last two seasons with victories and now will look ahead to the Tornados of King University. Kickoff for Saturday's contest is schedule for 11 a.m. in Bristol.

"It (the victory over Shorter) gives us confidence, knowing we won, but knowing how we won is important, coming back. But we also know we must do better," Harris said. It's great to win and this can show us what were capable of, maybe we don't have the best of games, missing some chances, however we'll be back on the training field, working on what we need to work on and continue to get better."
